We’ve made changes to bring keelboats back – here’s what’s new

If you’ve been on the water for Anniversary Day over the last few years, you’ll know the inner Waitematā still comes alive – the tugboats thunder off the line, the classic launches put on a stunning display, and crowds pack the waterfront to watch.

But then… there’s a gap.

Where once dozens of keelboats surged across the start line in the Harbour Races, we now see only a handful. It leaves a hole in the spectacle – and we’d love your help to bring that energy back.

Division 1 & 2 keelboats – we’re calling you.

The Auckland Anniversary Regatta used to be a true showcase of modern yachting in Auckland, and we’d love to see that again in 2026.

We’ve made a few changes to make the Harbour Race more accessible and appealing for modern keelboats:

  • New two-division format – up to 9.5m and over 9.5m – for bigger fleets and more competitive racing.
  • Later start time: 1300hrs, giving crews plenty of time to get to the start line.
  • Resolution Buoy start – easier for boats coming from the eastern side of the city (Bucklands Beach, Panmure, Pine Harbour… we’re looking at you!)
  • Westhaven finish – putting everyone in prime position for the after party at RNZYS, and an easy return home for boats berthed out west (no long slog back to Hobsonville after racing.)
  • Westhaven-based boats can simply park up and stroll straight to the bar.

The race itself is a 10-15nm course – a manageable length that fits easily into the day.

And of course, the more boats we get on the line, the more competitive and enjoyable the racing becomes for everyone.

Plus this year, we’ve added something special to make the day even better…

Whatever division you’re racing in, this is the place to round off Anniversary Day.

Thanks to the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, we’ve secured both the North Lawn outdoor bar and Dinghy Locker indoor bar exclusively for regatta competitors, crews, friends and supporters.

Rain or shine, we’re celebrating!

And to top it off, entertainment is provided by the renowned Royal New Zealand Navy Band, who will be performing live throughout the afternoon. If you’ve ever heard them play, you’ll know we’re in for something special.

The perfect way to wrap up a great day – or weekend – on the Waitematā.
