The BEST places to watch all the action on Anniversary Day
There’s so much happening all over the City of Sails at the Auckland Anniversary Regatta this Monday 27 January. So here’s our handy guide covering all the not-to-be missed highlights and where to head to see them…
Lighthouse Cafe, RNZYS – Westhaven
THE place to be on the morning of Anniversary Day – the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron’s Lighthouse Cafe at Westhaven will be open to the public and is the perfect spot to watch the Tugboat Race start at 10am, followed by the Classic Launch Race at 11am, and the Classic Yacht races from midday.
Westhaven Marina & St Mary’s Bay
Watch the Radio Controlled yacht races at Westhaven Marina and St Mary’s Bay from 10am on Anniversary Day. Incredibly dextrous for their miniature size, RC yachts are fascinating for all ages to watch. Competitors regularly include America’s Cup and top level sailors, as well as weekend warriors.
Viaduct Harbour
The Viaduct Harbour comes alive on Anniversary Day with the resounding beat of the pacekeeper’s drum, and the chants of 360 Dragon Boat paddlers surrounded by huge crowds as the colourful crews battle against each other for victory. It’s definitely a sight not to be missed!
Wynyard, Princes & Queens Wharves
There’s always a good crowd down at the Auckland City Waterfront on Anniversary Day. Head out to the end of the public wharves to see the tugboats and classics as they come past, racing from Westhaven down to Orakei and back again.
North Shore and East Coast Bays
Maungauika / North Head is a great location to watch the classic and modern keelers as they compete in the harbour races, while Takapuna hosts the impressive foiling fleets, and Murrays Bay will be alive with action as hundreds of young Optimist and Starling sailors compete in their Auckland Championships.
On the water
Didn’t win the Tugboat Race Experience, but still keen to be part of the action? There are plenty of on-water viewing options, from the steam-powered tugboat William C. Daldy, to a sailing or harbour cruise experience with Explore, or even take your own boat out to watch! Check out all the on-water viewing options here.
